The Future Workers of Northwest Indiana is a program created by one simple question.
"Why do you want this job?"
The applicant's answer: 'Because my mom is going to throw me out when I turn 18."
When this situation was presented to the vice principal at the applicant's school, his reply was: "He is not the only one."
So from this unfortunate experience, it became a project to help bridge the gap between school and the workforce.
We spoke to employers to find out what they were looking for.
We collaborated on the experiences we had, we decided to do something about it.
We developed an interactive workshop
that helps young men and women prepare for the employment searches ahead. We go over resume writing, professionalism, interview etiquette, financial literacy, and much more.
Our goal is for the program to come full circle, and when we acquire our own building we can integrate Future Workers of NWI with an animal shelter. This gives us the opportunity to observe and mentor the participants as well as to provide them with work experience. The animals will be cared for while waiting for their adopters to arrive.
We had 14 eager individuals came on out to invest in themselves. They were a fantastic group, and our information was well received. Lots of great questions were asked and we had fun doing it!
A super special thank you to all who came out to support the program, and the board members who made sure everything ran smoothly.
Thank you to Staples for providing the flyers we sent out plus an additional donation so we could pass out the supplies necessary for the participants to take notes and have a place to keep their information organized.
And last but certainly not least, thank you to Strack and Van Til's, who provided a donation of refreshments for all to enjoy.
We will be presenting information for young men and women ages 15 and up that will help them in navigating the workforce successfully. In this interactive presentation we will go over resume writing, interview etiquette, professionalism and a representative form BMO Harris will talk about financial literacy. Refreshments will be served, and we'll throw in a raffle to make it even MORE interesting! Bring your questions and a friend or two, and join us for an afternoon of preparing yourself for a lifetime of success!
